Team Michelle Conquers NYC Marathon for Northwell's Center for Cancer, Pregnancy and Reproduction

Josh Cohen, Jennifer Greenbaum, and Jaime Kornblau

At this year’s TCS New York City Marathon, Team Northwell members, Josh Cohen, Jennifer Greenbaum, and Jaime Kornblau will run 26.2 miles in memory of Michelle Kornblau Cohen — Josh’s wife, Jaime’s sister-in-law, and Jennifer’s friend — who lost her battle with ovarian cancer earlier this year. Funds raised will benefit the Michelle Kornblau Cohen Legacy Fund to support Northwell Health’s Center for Cancer, Pregnancy and Reproduction, which was instrumental in Michelle's care.

Diagnosed with ovarian cancer at 26 weeks pregnant, Michelle delivered a healthy baby boy, Franklin, under the Center's expert care. For six years, she bravely faced every treatment with unwavering positivity, humor, and athletic grit, a constant source of strength for Josh and Franklin.

Michelle’s family and friends are champions for the Center's advancement. In 2020, her parents, David and Amy Kornblau, generously supported the hiring of a nurse coordinator to develop a registry studying expectant mothers treated for cancer and their children's long-term health.

Q: How did your relationship with Michelle inspire you to take on this challenge?

Josh: Michelle was my wife. She was an amazing athlete, a varsity soccer and basketball player in high school. In 2022 when Michelle started radiation, I was overweight and decided to get back in shape. I started running, and ironically, she always told me not to run a marathon because everyone she knew who ran one got hurt. When she passed, running the marathon felt like the perfect way to honor her – and to do something she specifically told me not to!

Jennifer: I met Michelle and Josh through our sons, who were in preschool together. She was an incredible listener and always knew what to say. I remember one day I was telling her about something that I was nervous about committing to, and she said “What are you afraid of? Just do it!” She inspired me to be the truest version of myself. Running the marathon and fundraising allows me to honor her memory in a meaningful way.

Jaime: Michelle was my sister-in-law. Our love of sports, her brother, and the crazy way we made a bagel bonded us immediately.  She was the most optimistic and inclusive person, with the best energy and spirit. I ran the NYC Marathon last year in memory of my mom, and I swore I’d never do it again. But when the opportunity arose to run for Michelle, it wasn't a question of if but how could I not

Q: Why is supporting the Northwell Center for Cancer, Pregnancy and Reproduction so important to you?

Josh: Michelle and I were fortunate to have support during her treatment. We talked about helping those patients who might not have the same support, such as helping those who can’t get to their appointments due to financial reasons or not being able to get off work.  This fund helps ensure everyone gets the best possible care.

Jennifer: I can’t change the outcome of what happened to Michelle, Josh and Franklin, but this is the best way for us to make a meaningful contribution to help others like Michelle.

Jaime: When Michelle was diagnosed in 2018, she was an anomaly. There wasn't a strong support community or much guidance for pregnant women with cancer. We want to fund research and create a place where families can connect and learn from each other.

Q: What message do you have for those who have donated to your fundraising page?

Josh, Jennifer, and Jaime: Simply, thank you. Thank you for helping other families. Your generosity is making a real difference.
