Alan I. Greene and Helen Greene

Over the course of five decades, Helen and Alan Greene have helped move medicine forward in New York.

In the early 1950s, the Greene family was among the original philanthropists to support the creation of North Shore University Hospital, helping carry out the vision of its founders: to provide advanced clinical care in all medical specialties. Today, the family continues to support North Shore and the people in our communities who benefit from its care.

The Greene Family has championed emergency medicine at North Shore University Hospital for more than two decades. The Greene Emergency Center, named in their honor, serves as a pillar of care for the hospital, boasting an American College of Surgeons Level I Trauma Center and a New York State-certified stroke center. In 1998, their support spurred the hospital’s first expansion to accommodate the increased volume and complexity of patients requiring acute care at North Shore University Hospital. At that time, we averaged 50,000 emergency department visits per year and planned for an anticipated increase in volume. Today, we provide emergency care for more than 250 people in the Greene Emergency Center daily and 90,000 patients annually.

In 2020, Helen and Alan made a gift to further support advanced care at North Shore University Hospital. To honor their commitment, Northwell’s flagship quaternary care hospital will prominently display the Greene family name in the redesigned main lobby.

In addition to the emergency department and lobby that bear the family name, the Greenes have supported medical student scholarships at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, research at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, and created and endowed the David J. Greene Professor of Medicine, named in memory of Alan’s father.

Alan Greene has been a Trustee of Northwell Health since 1973. During his tenure on the Board, he served as Treasurer and as a member of the Governance, Finance and Executive Committees. He chaired the Investment Committees for more than 20 years. He also served on the Capital Finance Committee and is a member of the Payson Wharton Society, having committed a gift in his estate to support Northwell. Helen serves as an Associate Trustee of Northwell Health.

Along with their two sons, Michael and James, the Greene family continues to advance health care for our communities through their generous giving.
