Running meaningful miles for Peconic Bay Medical Center

On November 4, 2018 Indira Schwarting ran 26.2 miles in the TCS New York City Marathon for Peconic Bay Medical Center as a member of Team Northwell Health.

A Southold resident, Indira ran to thank Northwell Health for the excellent care that she and those close to her receive. “Everyone is wonderful,” she says of Northwell employees. “Always a good attitude, with a smile. Always professional.

“I’m just thankful for Northwell sponsoring me,” says Indira. “I wanted to run and raise money for Northwell Health. When I run, every mile has a meaning.”

Running for health in her community

Originally from Peru, Indira moved to the United States in 2006. She says she went from a culture of walking everywhere to driving everywhere.

Mindful of her health, she decided to start running in 2012. “After having two kids, I had to do something had to take care of myself, so I started running,” she says. “It’s like my relief. You want your kids to be happy. Make yourself happy.”

She’s run the New York City Marathon twice before — also in support of Peconic Bay Medical Center. This was her third year running the marathon, but her first with Team Northwell Health. In previous years, Indira fundraised for the departments of gynecology and pediatrics — areas important to her as a woman and a mother. “My kids have asthma problems and it’s so scary,” Indira says. “I fundraise to help women and children and that’s so important.”

Last time Indira ran the New York City Marathon, she finished in 3 hours, 36 minutes and 11 seconds. This year, she had a goal time of 3 hours 35 minutes and beat it, finishing in 3 hours, 31 minutes and 30 seconds.
