An ambulatory surgery center expands health care in Greenwich Village

With the addition of an ambulatory surgery center, the Phyllis and William Mack Pavilion at Lenox Health Greenwich Village has restored a level of health care in Lower Manhattan that was lacking since the closing of St. Vincent’s Hospital.

Bringing outpatient surgery closer to home

The pavilion, which has been home to Manhattan’s first and only full service 24-hour emergency center since 2014 and an imaging center since 2016, gained the $25-million, 30,000-square-foot Ambulatory Surgery Center in 2017. It includes six operating rooms, two procedure rooms, eight prep areas and 23 recovery beds spanning the entire fourth floor of the 160,000-square-foot building.

“When St. Vincent’s Hospital closed in 2010, we promised to restore healthcare services for residents of the West Village and other neighborhoods in Lower Manhattan,” says Michael Dowling, president and chief executive officer of Northwell Health. “Our ongoing expansion of medical care in Greenwich Village and other neighboring communities reaffirms our commitment to filling the healthcare void in Lower Manhattan and providing easy access to a range of different services.”

Expanding to host community groups and medical practices

A conference center on the building’s sixth floor can accommodate up to 74 people. “We are part of the fabric of this community,” says Alex Hellinger, executive director of Lenox Hill Greenwich Village, “which will benefit from a new 5,000-square-foot conference center that we will make available to our neighbors to host events, workshops and support groups.”

The medical pavilion is home to the 5,500-square-foot Northwell Health Physician Partners Orthopaedic Institute, which offers comprehensive care in joint replacement, sports medicine, and surgical and rehabilitation services for illnesses and injuries affecting the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, foot and ankle. The pavilion also includes pain management and urology practices.
